Oh hiya summer holidays, we’ve been expecting you! Introducing our ‘Take Me to the Island’ series, in which we call upon some of our fave fashion babes to share their vacay tips, tricks and River Island picks. This time we hear from gorgeous TV presenter Ashley James, who headed to the sandy shores of Holbox Island in Mexico…
Hey Ashley! What’s your ultimate travel essential?
I really like to look after my skin so it has to be factor 50 sunscreen. It takes a bit longer to tan, but once you get one it lasts so much longer!
How would you describe your holiday style?
Very laid back and a bit boho. I love waking up, throwing on a bikini and letting the weather look after my hair and makeup.
What beauty product do you swear by on holiday?
Aside from sunscreen it has to be mascara. I don't know why, but even if I wear nothing else I still feel great. Back at home I exfoliate regularly, but when I'm away I use the sand whilst my skin is wet - it's better than any product I have back home!
Beachy waves or tousled top knot?
Beach waves. It's literally my favourite type of hair and I always try to recreate it at home but it's never the same!
Bikini or one-piece?
Definitely bikini. I find them the most flattering on my body as I am quite curvy, so I like to show off my waist.
Sandals or sliders?
Ooh tough one, I like both. I'm also a wedges fan for night time.
Sightseeing or sunbathing?
A mixture! I love to explore my environments, either by bike, or kayak depending where I am.
Tell us about your most memorable moment of the holiday?
We watched the sunset from a jacuzzi rooftop bar, whilst sipping cocktails, and the entire sky turned orange. I've honestly never experienced anything like it.
Give us food envy! What's the best thing you ate on holiday?
The food in Mexico is incredible! The local speciality on the island is ceviche, so I had a fish ceviche with a side of guacamole, which I ate from my beach bed facing the ocean. The fish was so fresh, I'll be dreaming of it forever.
How do you take your style from beach to bar?
With a shower! I try to leave my hair as it is but I wash, and moisturise, then I'll throw on a dress and wedges. I keep my makeup light; usually bronzer, highlighter, mascara and some gold eye shadow.
Best book recommendation?
There are so many amazing books. I love anything crime related so definitely don't come to me for light-hearted love stories.
What’s on your holiday playlist?
Definitely feel good music. I listen to a lot of afrobeats, and love Coldplay, Bob Marley, and Jack Johnson in the sunshine.
